Pilates

Pilates

Pilates was developed in England in 1912 by a man named Joseph Pilates. Pilates was a self-defense instructor for detectives at Scotland Yard. Joe refined his system of exercise and trained internees during World War I. Pilates' earliest design came about when he equipped springs for hospital beds which allowed bedridden patients to exercise against resistance. Pilates spent over a half century developing his specialized exercise equipment, refining the philosophy of his exercise program, and incorporating many principles of modern dance into his regimen.

The theory behind Pilates is that work needs to be done on the core muscles — the abdominal muscles and the lower back muscles — in order to strengthen the body as a whole. When the core is strong, it enables the joints in the limbs to move more productively. Pilates has developed into a series of exercises that teaches flexibility of the limbs and stability of the trunk muscles. The Pilates program is a sequence of exercises that works with breathing, body awareness and coordination. The philosophy of Pilates is to pinpoint six main principles: breathing, centering, concentration, control, flow of movement and precision.

At Back On Track, our therapists focus on shoulder, pelvic, rib cage, girdle, and cervical placement. Everyone who is participating in this flowing series of exercises is conscious of those parts of their body and learn to control them through training their core muscles.

The movement specialists at Back On Track offer individualized sessions to incorporate the principles of Pilates. When a patient has reached adequate progress, they are allowed the opportunity to join in an intimate group class depending on their level, usually limited to 5-6 people. An extensive number of Pilates classes are extended to our patients with all kinds of needs. Some classes are specialized for patients with neck and back pain; some for advanced patients who are concerned about universal health and fitness; and some for our older clients trying to maintain flexibility while building endurance. No matter what your level, these classes are designed to increase overall fitness and continued resistive equipment training.
